Large scale testing facilities

We have facilities for full scale testing within the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering and at the Building Research Park. This includes the 'HIVE' facility for the full scale environmental testing of heat and moisture flow in materials, wind loading and flooding.

Previous full scale testing has included loading an instrumented drystone retaining wall to failure. We can also build and test smaller scale models.

Field instrumentation and monitoring

We have expertise to build and install instrumentation for monitoring building and geotechnical structures. This includes instruments to measure soil moisture content and soil water pressures. It also includes a thermal imaging camera, which has been used to non-destructively assess drystone retaining walls and quay walls.
